Registering a number for texting
US carriers block texts from business numbers that aren't registered. LineTappy shows a warning when a number isn't registered yet. Receiving texts works either way.
Local US numbers: A2P 10DLC
- In the Twilio console, open Messaging → Regulatory Compliance (Twilio may call it "Trust Hub" or "A2P 10DLC").
- Register a brand. If you have a business with an EIN, choose a Low-Volume Standard brand. If you're an individual without an EIN, choose Sole Proprietor (limited to one number).
- Register a campaign, describing what you text about, with sample messages and how people agree to receive them. Your website should have a privacy policy and SMS terms.
- Add your number to the campaign's Messaging Service.
Registering as an individual, without a business? Twilio's own guide walks through it step by step: A2P 10DLC for individuals (Twilio blog).
Approval usually takes a few days to two weeks. Twilio charges small one-off and monthly registration fees.
Toll-free numbers
In the Twilio console, open Messaging → Regulatory Compliance → Toll-free verification and submit the number. Verification is free and usually takes a few days.
Canadian numbers
