Getting started
What do I need to use LineTappy?
A Twilio account with at least one phone number, and an Android phone (Android 14 or newer) or a computer with a modern browser. There's no iPhone app yet; iPhone users can use the web app at app.linetappy.com.
How do I connect my Twilio account?
When you set up LineTappy, choose one of two ways:
- Quick connect: enter your Twilio Account SID and Auth Token once. LineTappy uses them a single time to create its own key in your Twilio account, then forgets the Auth Token. Where to find them.
- With an API key: create a Standard API key in the Twilio Console (API keys & tokens), and enter its SID (starts with SK) and its secret. Twilio may call the secret "Client Secret"; it isn't your Auth Token.
Is it safe to give LineTappy my Auth Token?
LineTappy uses it once, to create its own key, and never stores it. The key LineTappy keeps is encrypted, and you can switch it off in Twilio at any time. Nobody from LineTappy will ever ask you for your Auth Token, a password or card details.
I don't have a Twilio number yet.
Numbers are bought in your Twilio account. See Getting a number.
Texting
My texts say "Not delivered" (error 30034). Why?
US carriers block texts from numbers that aren't registered for business texting. Local numbers need A2P 10DLC registration, and toll-free numbers need verification. It's done in your Twilio account; see Registering your number for texting. For questions about your registration's status, contact Twilio support.
New texts don't show up straight away.
Check that Instant texts is on for the number (app: Settings › Incoming calls and voicemail; web: Account), and that notifications are allowed for LineTappy on your phone or browser.
Can I send photos?
Yes. Big photos are made smaller before sending (a whole text can be up to 5 MB). Tap a photo to see it full screen, and to copy, save or share it.
Calls and voicemail
How do calls work?
Calls go out from your Twilio number over the internet, with that number as your caller ID. Or turn on Call my cell first: LineTappy calls your own cell, then connects the call, so it uses your cell minutes and works without data. For incoming calls, choose Ring in LineTappy for the number.
How do I set my voicemail greeting?
In Settings › Incoming calls and voicemail (or the web Account page), open the number and choose its greeting: the standard one, your own words read by a voice, your own recording, or a link to your own audio file.
Can I call 911 with LineTappy?
No. LineTappy isn't for emergency calls. Use your phone's own dialer.
Plans and billing
How much does LineTappy cost?
Basic (1 number) $3.99 a month or $38.99 a year; Plus (up to 3 numbers) $5.99 or $58.99; Pro (up to 5 numbers) $7.99 or $78.99. Each extra phone is $1.99 a month or $19.49 a year. Twilio bills you separately for your numbers, texts and calls.
Is there a free trial?
Yes, 3 days, one per person and per Twilio account. Cancel before it ends and you won't be charged.
How do I change or cancel my plan?
If you bought it in the app, in the Play Store (Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions). If you bought it on the website, at app.linetappy.com › Account › Manage subscription.
What happens when my plan ends?
Everything keeps working for 7 days. Then LineTappy puts your numbers' Twilio settings back the way they were before you used LineTappy. Your history stays readable, and subscribing again brings your setup back.
How many phones can I use?
A plan covers one phone; add more as Extra devices (up to 5 phones). Browsers using the web app don't count.
The web app and notifications
How do I get notifications on my computer?
At app.linetappy.com, turn them on from the banner in Messages, or Account › Notifications on this computer. In Brave, first turn on "Use Google services for push messaging" at brave://settings/privacy and restart Brave. Private or incognito windows can't get notifications with the tab closed.
Your account
LineTappy paused my texting and calling.
The spending alert pauses LineTappy if your Twilio account spends more than usual in a day. If that was you, resume in Settings. If it wasn't, change your Twilio Auth Token in the Twilio Console right away.
How do I disconnect Twilio or delete my account?
In the app's Settings, or on the web Account page. Either way, LineTappy puts your numbers back the way they were. LineTappy can't delete its key from your Twilio account, so delete it yourself in the Twilio Console under API keys & tokens. More: Deleting your account.
Twilio questions
Who do I ask about my Twilio bill, numbers or registration?
Your Twilio account is supported by Twilio: help.twilio.com. That includes Twilio charges, buying or porting numbers, texting registration, and account suspensions.
